As you’re probably aware, Two Birds offers all different kinds of services, from book coaching to formatting, and a whole lot of things in between. Well as of now, we’ve got one more service to offer you — beta reading!

What is a beta read?

Simply put, a beta read is a read-through of your novel. It’s an opportunity to get another pair of eyes on your manuscript before you take the final steps toward self-publishing your work or querying it, depending on your end goal.

You won’t get the same amount of detail as you would if you had one of us do a Manuscript Analysis or Developmental Edit, but you’ll receive 3-5 pages of feedback on a variety of subjects, such as pacing, your opening and closing chapters, character development, cohesiveness, and more.

Who is it appropriate for?

A beta read is appropriate for any author who might want some extra feedback on their manuscript. If you are wanting detailed feedback from an editor, or help in refining your story, a developmental edit or manuscript analysis would be more appropriate. But if you’re wanting the opinion of an experienced reader to provide you with less formal notes and thoughts, a beta read might just be what you’re looking for.

Beta reads cost less than other forms of feedback we offer, but the tradeoff is less specific information.

When should I do a beta read?

Since a beta read provides you with information on the higher-level aspects of your story, ideally you would have this done before you invest in a line edit and proofread. It would be appropriate to do between a developmental edit or manuscript analysis and a line edit.
